Organizations- Gitiadas

The Association Friends of the reconstruction of Sparta’s Ancient Theater , named "The Gitiadas" , was founded in the spring of 1994 by a group of Spartans, and is a non-profit organization.

It’s goal is to introduce all Spartans, Lakonians, Greeks and as many non-Greeks as possible, to Sparta’s ancient theater.

We believe that in the past, more exploratory excavations should have been made by the English School of Archaeology, and that the ancient theater should have been promoted as a monument by the Ministry of Culture. In the years to come, we and many other Spartans, long to see this large theater (with a sitting capacity of 16,000) restored.

Our dream is to see the Sparta’s archeological acropolis transformed into an archeological park with the existing historical monuments restored (ancient theater, the temple of Christ the Savior, the temple of Athena, the renovated ancient ruins).

These mnimeia, are gifts of the past, and belong to the future. That being said, it is our responsibility to preserve them and pass them down to our future generations.

The rejuvenation of these these memorials will enrich the content of our contemporary lives while simultaneously giving busting our national tourism. This could be of economic benefit to our community. We need only enhance and promote out archaeological inheritance.
