Elafonisos - Morphology

Elafonisos is located east of the Laconian gulf, west of cape Maleas and north of Kithira. It has an area is 20 square km.  It lies 350 meters away from Pounta and it is separated by a narrow and shallow water channel not more than 2.5 meters deep.
The island belongs to the province of Laconia.  It has a triangular shape and the main part of its surface extends from the northeast (village of Elafonisos) to the southwest (Gulf of Saintess Marina).  At the center of the island is mount Vardia whose highest peak has an altitude of 278 meters.  Southwest of Vardia is mount Siros (Kato Nisi) and southeast is mount Frango.

The bay of Sarakiniko: This is a bay of historical importance, for both Elafonisos and Southern Peloponesos.  It is formed by cape Helena and cape Saintess Marina (or Maria) and it forms the southeastern  border of the Lakonian gulf.  This bay got its name from the Sarakinian pirates which used it as their primary base.

Bay of Frango: This bay is formed by the rocky cape Frango (which is the southmost point of Elafonisos) and cape Helena.  It's shape is circular.  To the north of the bay lies the fantastic beach of Simos, one of the finest beaches of the Mediterranean.

Ormos of Lefid:  This bay lies on the southeast side of Elafonisos and expands from Delekouvia and Mitika.

Elafonisos’s channel: This body of water was most commonly called the  Cervi Channel and can be found in most medieval maps.   Until 1893 it was the only quick sea-way between eastern and western Greece. It is defined by two Elafonisian capes (Frango and Saints Marina) and a Kithiran cape (Spathi or Moudari), and it is 4.5 miles long (Frango - Spathi).

The small islands of Elafonisos: The island is ornamented seven smaller islands which form two rows.  There names are: Paviopetri,   Stavros, Xeropoules, Lepto Nisi, Prasonisi, Kassela and Agliftis.
